What is tourmaline?

Tourmaline is a precious gemstone, often referred to as the 'electric stone' due to its unique ionic and infrared heat properties. What sets this tourmaline apart from other gemstones is that tourmaline has the ability to naturally produce negative ions. In addition to producing negative ions, tourmaline is also a great conductor of far infrared heat.

Why is tourmaline used in hair tools?

As previously mentioned, tourmaline has ionic properties. Tourmaline becomes electrically charged when heated, which is what makes it extremely useful for heat-styling. The negative ions from the tourmaline break down water molecules for the hair to absorb, aiding in moisture retention, they also neutralize the free radicals created by positive ions present on the hair. This is significant because frizz is caused by an excess of positive ions, which is also known as static electricity. 

Static electricity is the result of an imbalance between negative and positive charges in an object. Tourmaline’s ability to produce negative ions when heated means that it also has the ability to neutralize the positive ions and, in turn, reduce frizzy hair. Negative ions also help seal in moisture and flatten the hair cuticle, making hair smooth and shiny.
