Straightening 101

Before we discuss how to glam straight hair up a bit, let's address how to get it to peak sleek. The products you need to use when your hair is still wet will depend on your hair's texture. For example, those with naturally coarse or curly hair might need both serum and smoothing oil, while someone with hair that's relatively straight can probably get away with just one of those products.

All hair types should prep wet or dry hair with a hair primer, such as the NuMe Rise and Prime Hair Primer, and heat protective sprays prior to styling, like our Watch Me Werk Thermal Heat Protectant.

If your hair is already on the straight side, you can likely get away with not having to do a salon-style blowout before using a straightener. For example, YouTuber Emily Canham demonstrates some chic prom 'dos using our Megastar Hair Straightener in this tutorial. As she points out in the video, if you are starting with dry hair and want to make sure your results are extra smooth, the NuMe Argan Oil will tame the frizz and add shine.

If your hair is naturally curly, the end result will look much better if you take the time to do a blowout with a round bristle brush prior to using a flat iron. We know you may be tempted to just use a paddle brush and try to smooth it down while drying, BUT this is prom night, so you have to step up your game.

After showering, air dry hair for 20 to 30 minutes then apply the primer, heat protectant and smoothing products of your choice. Blow dry sections (the smaller, the better, for the best results) with a round brush, making sure not to twist the brush as you pull it down since your final look is going to be stick-straight (this also just creates less tangles). When hair is dry, use a straightener to smooth section by section (again, try to avoid sectioning off too much hair at a time). Some Styling Tips

Beauty blogger and YouTuber Tori Sterling has some cute ideas — from twisted half-up, half down looks to a French braid at the crown—for short, straight prom hair in this video. All you really need are some tiny hair ties and some bobby pins.

We also like the long hair formal style (that definitely has some volume at the crown) created by beauty influencer Camila Coelho in this tutorial. WARNING: It does involve teasing the top section of hair, which might or might not be traumatic after all the effort you just went through to get it super straight!
