11 min read

The heat and humidity is doing a number on everyone’s hair this summer. It’s that time of year for fun in the sun. Splashing in the ocean, soaking up the rays, and watching those tan lines form. To keep hair flowing, healthy and frizz-free during the summer, we need to use every tool in our belt to our advantage.

Beach day hair is magnificent. All of the natural beach waves and extra volume is awesome. But in reality, the salt is drying out your hair making it brittle and prone to breakage. The volume is often due to a mixture of sand build up in the hair, and dehydration. This isn't good for our hair health in the long run. The extra sun exposure also weakens your hair because of the heavy heat and UV rays. How do you keep your hair smooth, healthy, and frizz-free through all of this humidity, sun, and salt water?

Luckily, there are some trade secrets we’re going to let you in on to keep hydrated hair all hot girl summer. Plus, a few tips to create bouncy beach waves at home. Free flowing, voluminous hair isn’t only for summer. This look can be achieved all year round with the right tools and techniques.

PREP WITH PURPOSE

Your hair must be strong, nourished, and well taken care of in order to stay strong, luscious, thick and healthy. There are a few simple, yet effective, summer hair care tips you can take to breeze through summer with your healthiest hair yet. Having the right products and tools will be the secret weapon.

During the summer, your usual routine may not be enough. Adding some essentials to your daily hair regimen can make all the difference. The heat, sweat, and humidity can stress your hair. You’ll find that strands become frizzy and weighed down at the same time. All products are not created equal. There is a huge difference in the quality and technology of the products and tools available out there. Obviously you want only the best in your kit.

When you use the most pure and nourishing ingredients, your styles last longer. It’s important that the foundations of your hair remain healthy and vibrant. The longer you treat your hair well with quality products and gentile tools, the more it pays off.

Healthy hair loves cool water, mineral rich products, gentile heat tools, and careful protection. During the summer these are more important than ever. So let’s get down to exactly what you need to have thriving hair in this summer heat.

CLEANSE SMART

washing hair

Shampoo and conditioner are the foundations of your hair care routine. What many people don’t know is, most drug store shampoos are damaging to your hair. They are filled with cheap detergents and artificial fragrances. These absolutely strip the hair of natural oils, making the hair and scalp both dry and brittle.

All great styles start with healthy, clean hair. So make sure you’re washing correctly. Always start with the scalp and scrub lightly using a back and forth or side to side motion. Avoid scrubbing in circles as that will cause tangling.

Don’t over wash the ends! If you don’t have a build up of product or oil at the ends of your hair,  there’s no need to scrub that area with a large amount of shampoo. Cleanse the scalp thoroughly, and rinse with cool water to retain maximum moisture.

Using a shampoo that gently cleanses while locking in moisture is best. Make sure to pay attention to key ingredients. Choose a shampoo that strengthens and repairs. Try adding a moisturizing shampoo like our,  Tourmaline Smoothing Shampoo  to your routine. Ingredients like tourmaline, alanine, serine, and hydrolyzed quinoa repair damage and hydration.

You’ll be amazed how strong and supple your hair becomes with each wash.

HYDRATE & MOISTURIZE

hair mask

Now it’s time to condition your hair and build the foundation for perfect, frizz free beach waves or smooth curls.

After rinsing the shampoo from your hair, add a generous amount of high quality conditioner to the length of your hair from mid ear down to the ends. We recommend the  Tourmaline Smoothing Conditioner  that won’t weigh down your hair.  Let it soak in for 5-10 minutes while you do the rest of your shower routine. Make sure to rinse well with cool water and dry with a microfiber towel or soft tee shirt.

While hair is still wet, before any other products, go ahead and add your  Rise and Prime.  Adding this while hair is wet allows it to soak in well. It acts as a leave-in conditioner and protects hair through styling. Use a wide tooth comb to evenly distribute the treatment through every strand. Your hairstyles hold longer and every product you use is more effective after priming your hair.

While your hair is still damp, add in a  hair mask  from mid ear to ends. Use a wide tooth comb to evenly distribute the primer. This step helps add essential vitamins and minerals while locking in moisture. The increased temperatures create sweat and build up. Using a hair mask is the best defense against the natural elements. The concentrated natural oils gently soften damaging build up, and make styling effortless for frizz free hair. We love the  Tourmaline Smoothing Hair Mask.  It uses citric acid to draw out impurities while infusing hair with 11 amino acids, hydrolyzed quinoa, and tourmaline minerals to restore the hair.

Leaving your hair mask in for 10-15 minutes on damp hair after washing will keep your hair frizz-free and moisturized. Bonus points for covering your hair with a shower cap with the mask on to lock in your natural body heat.

Now it’s time to layer in a lightweight serum like  Sleeky in a Bottle.  Add a dime sized amount while hair is still damp. You’ll want to find products that are natural and packed with vitamins and minerals.

You may have some fly aways or a few split ends to tame. Add a split end treatment like  Seal the Deal  to protect your hair from split ends.

PROTECT

There are several strategies you can use to protect your hair from the inevitable summer elements. You’ve already primed your hair for styling, added a mask for moisture, nourished with a high quality serum, and sealed any split ends. Now what about shielding your perfectly prepped hair from the heat?

Heat Protectant

You may not have heard, but heat protectant is needed for all types of heat, not only when using hot tools like a straightener, curling iron or hair dryer. If you’ve ever stepped on the hot concrete with bare feet, you know how the sun can raise the temperature of nearly anything. That includes our hair. A thermal heat protectant like  Watch Me Werk  does wonders in protecting our hair from the heavy summer heat and damage.

Sunscreen

Where does the sun shine on your body the most? That’s right, the top of your head. If you’re out in the water, or cruising on a boat your scalp is just as prone to a sunburn as the rest of your skin. Use an aerosol sunscreen on the top of your head to protect the delicate skin on your scalp. The heat protectant has your hair covered already, but adding that layer of sun screen goes a long way. Your future self will thank you for avoiding a sunburn.

Moisturize hair before swimming

Salt water, lake water and chlorinated pool water are all quite hard on our hair. Applying a protective layer of high quality moisture like a  Tourmaline Hair Mask  before swimming goes a long way. This layer of protection locks in your hair’s natural oils and combats the salt and chlorine.

Rinse hair after swimming

Our hair loves fresh water but doesn’t take kindly to soaking all day long in salt or chlorine. That is a one way ticket to frizzy, dry, brittle hair. Once you get out of the pool or ocean, take a quick moment to rinse your hair free of the toxins with fresh water. In a pinch, even using a bottle of water will help wash away the drying elements from swimming. Your future self will thank you, and there will be less build up when you properly wash your hair at home.

STYLE

waves

Here’s where the deep conditioning, hair masks and smoothing treatments show how well they’ve paid off. You don’t have to be fresh out of the ocean to get fabulous beach waves.

Heat free waves and curls

Wash and condition your hair as usual but don’t ring the water out yet. While hair is still soaking wet, apply your hair primer first, comb through and then ring out the excess moisture. Next use a nourishing serum like  Sleeky in a Bottle  all over and comb through again to evenly distribute the serum. Now top it off with a split end sealer to nourish and avoid any breakage. Now you’re ready to set some truly awesome, heat free beach styles.

You can air dry your hair or choose an  ionic dryer  to keep hair soft. Once your hair is almost dry but still a tiny bit damp, spray with a very light dusting of medium hold hair spray. Part hair down the middle from forehead to nape of the neck. Pick one of these 2 next heat free waves methods.

For loose curls

Gather each section on each side and twist into 2 buns. Secure with a soft scrunchy. Place your buns high or low, wherever they will be comfortable while you sleep.

For loose waves

Divide each side into 3 sections and twist each section. Braid each side and secure with a soft scrunchy.

Head off to bed, and while you sleep your hair will dry in place. In the morning, let your hair down and you will have beautiful loose curls or waves. Using a satin pillowcase as well as a bonnet while you sleep will cut down on any frizz.

Curly Girl Method

For you lucky ducks with naturally curly or wavy hair. Use the curly girl method of styling to maximize your hair’s strengths. Shampoo as usual then comb in your hair mask while hair is still damp. Leave in for 10 minutes then rinse the mask out with cool water.

Comb through your hair with a hair primer, then a high quality serum. Air dry while scrunching your curls on each side, and with hair flipped upside down. With every “scrunch” hold close to the scalp and squeeze several times per section.

When hair is about half way dry, add a  diffuser  attachment to your hair dryer. Hold the dryer about 1 inch away from hair and diffuse while scrunching. Be sure not to press the dryer to your scalp. The diffuser spreads the air flow out and helps to reduce frizz. You’ll be amazed watching your smooth waves and curls form.

Throw on your bonnet before bed and your curls can last 2-3 days before washing again.

Curl or Straighten

Very few of us have the perfect curly or straight hair without a little help from our friends. Time to whip out your hot tools! Before styling, you’ll want to apply a hair primer and heat protectant while your hair is still damp. This will protect your hair from heat damage and help your style hold all day.

For effortless, smooth tresses, choose the right  flat iron  for the job. Make sure it has adjustable heat settings and floating plates to avoid pulling and breakage. Your straightened style will look best when hair has been freshly washed and primed. To add a little movement, add a light dusting of  finishing spray  to the length.

$30 off all curling wands

To create bouncy beach waves and curls you can’t go wrong with an  automatic curling wand.  It does most of the work for you. Who doesn’t want to cut their hair styling time in half? When hair is completely dry, add a light layer of finishing spray to the length before curling and brush through. Curl in 1 inch sections and leave the very last 1-2 inches at the ends straight. That is what creates flowing beach waves. Use your fingers and toss through your curls to get that perfectly mussed look.
